We got our start in the farmers markets, and we love them still. Making excellent coffee outdoors, regardless of weather, takes a special type – the hardboiled gutsiness of Nick Fury in Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes coupled with the bleak erudition of Mikhail Astrov in Uncle Vanya.
But the markets mean more to us than an opportunity to make obscure literary references. It is also a chance to be among people who are passionate about food. It has been shown that shopping at farmers markets involves up to 40 times more social interaction than shopping at an average big box grocery. Markets therefore stave off feelings of depression, ennui, and alienation. So does drinking coffee.
When serving espresso at the markets, we use only Roman Espresso on vintage propane powered Astoria lever machines at our outdoor Kiosk at the Ferry Building on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, to the Temescal Farmers Market on Sunday in Oakland.
We bring beans roasted the day before to every market.
