Rockefeller Center
1 Rockefeller Plaza, Concourse Level, Suite D
M-F 7-7, Sat & Sun 11-5
We opened our shop in Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan in March of 2012. Rockefeller Center is the largest private construction project of the 20th century, comprising 20 buildings and encompassing eight million square feet of office space. Originally conceived in 1928 as a location for the Metropolitan Opera, the financial crash of 1929 made John D Rockefeller Jr. take a narrow-eyed view of the necessities of New York cultural life and resort to a construction project which would employ thousands, save US Steel, change the shape and culture of Midtown Manhattan, and, let’s not forget, make a lot of money. The center is awash in iconic images – the ice skating rink on the concourse level, the Christmas tree, the Today Show studios, Lee Lawry’s statue of Atlas, Paul Manship’s statue of Prometheus, and dozens more. One can only imagine the dissonance if Diego Rivera’s fresco featuring an image of Lenin were left to stand among the literally titanic imagery virtually embodying, in gold leaf and bronze, the mighty aspirations of the United States’ leading oligarch during its worst economic crisis.
We occupy a cringeingly modest .0000875 percent of the total complex. Nestled around the corner from the ice skating rink, on the concourse level, at the bottom of the steps leading down from 1 Rockefeller plaza (entrance just off 48th st.), our coffee bar is a sleek and efficient respite from the clamor and bustle of mid town Manhattan. We serve blends and seasonally changing single origin espressi on two La Marzocco Strada MP espresso machines, blends and seasonally changing single origin coffees on two pour-over stations, two types of iced coffees, and treats – granola, yogurt parfaits, and pastries- all made in our kitchen in Brooklyn.
